A Low-Dose CT Scan could save your life!

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S among both men and women. A Majority of lung cancers are caused by cigarette smoking and usually not detected until symptoms develop. B y that time the disease is often more advanced, making a cure much less likely.

Low Dose computed tomography (LDCT) provides earlier detection, when lung cancer is most treatable and curable. It works much like an x-ray to produce images of your chest and lungs. The National Lung Screen Trial (NLST) revealed that smokers who had low-dose CT scans had a 20% lower risk of dying from lung cancer than those who received chest X-rays.

What is your risk?

Multiply the number of packs smoked per day times the years you have smoked and that equals your packs per year history.

You are considered High Risk if you are:

A current of former smoker age 55-74 AND you have a 30 pack per year history
Older than age 50 with a 20+ pack per year history plus family history of lung cancer, radon or occupational carcinogen exposure(asbestos, arsenic, fumes, etc.), COPD or pulmonary fibrosis, or personal history of cancer or lymphoma.
If you quit smoking less than 15 years ago, you are still considered High Risk.

Should you be screened?

Talk to your physician about the risks and benefits of screening. A low-dose CT scan may be recommended or YOU may request it. In order to be covered by Medicare, you must visit your physician and have an order.
